Much like I like erotica to be anatomically correct. Females will have patches of colours from one or the other X, depending on which one is switched off in any given area.Īnd yes, I like books - even children's ones - to follow some basic laws of biology. Males only have one possible coat colour because they only have one X. Rather than females having twice the genetic material as males, one of their Xs will be switched off (become inactive) during cell division (and daughter cells - found in the same area - will have the same X switched off).

If you want to know why: Simplifying here, but basically: Ginger cats are almost always male and tortoiseshell almost always female. I wasn't at all keen on the illustrations - one, because they are just not at all appealing, and two, because the kitten, labelled as "she" is ginger. Either way, a positive ending, but a book that I would probably only recommend as a way of showing a child that it's ok to be shy (but to try not to push people away, it follows). This happens in people too, I guess because children/young animals don't have as many preconceived ideas as adults and thus more readily accept quirks. I found it interesting that it was a kitten that finally befriended our socially awkward protagonist. Grumpy Cat realises he does like her really, saves her and they become firm friends. In his panic, he does everything to dissuade her, finally climbing up a tall tree. Like pretty much any other socially awkward being, Grumpy cat is all OMG, another living thing? That wants to talk to me?! *runs away* But kitten follows him. But one particularly wet and miserable day, a kitten comes across Grumpy Cat and tries to befriend him (to share warmth?). The fate of many a socially awkward being. The other cats leave him be because they think he doesn't want friends, so he sits all by himself, feeling really lonely. You see, the titular Grumpy Cat is not really grumpy, he just doesn't know how to be friends with the other cats. If Teckentrup's Grumpy Cat were a meme he'd be more Socially Awkward Penguin than Grumpy Cat. Before anyone asks, this is NOT The Grumpy Cat of internet fame.
